I always said my babies would have to learn to read early. Well, Emmett is living proof of my efforts. That's right. When you watch this video he will read you a story. Enjoy!

Haylee and Owen's Visit to Omaha

We had a great time when Haylee and Owen stopped to visit us. They showed up for dinner Sunday night, which was extra fun because we also had the missionaries over, and then stayed until Tuesday morning. On Monday we took a trip to the Omaha Zoo and we got to see many amazing things! Here is a little snapshot of our adventure.
Baby Orangutan
Unfortunately, Haylee was very sick Monday evening and it put a damper on her trip, but she is better now. She looks pretty cute with her little prego belly. I never got to feel baby Miriam moving around but Haylee says she likes to jam out to the music in the car. Emmett did the same thing.

The Joy of Rice A Roni
Some days I just let Emmett get into whatever he can find (before which I always make sure the rooms are safe). Well, today is the day and my little man got into the food storage and pulled out 5 or 6 boxes of Rice a Roni. He loved them because they made a cool swooshing noise when he shaked them. They also slid along the floor under his hand as he crawled around.
Now he's trying to get the stapler out of the desk drawer and he is frustrated because his arm won't fit through the gap far enough to grab it. He's making his I'm Mad face where he squints his eyes at me and grunts, "Oouh". I think it's cute to see him learning from hard experiences. He's persistent. Some day he'll get the stapler out and then I'll just take it away. Life isn't fair sometimes.
The other neat thing in Emmett's life is that another top tooth has broken through the gums. He now has three top teeth broken through and one still very swollen.

A Week Off
This week I had a week off....kind of. I didn't have a young women's activity on Wednesday like we normally do because it was the first day of school. I didn't have to take anybody to church with me this week because everyone slept in. And I didn't even have to teach a lesson! It was great.
But I didn't totally get the day off at church. I was found in the mothers' room during Sunday School by a sister that was asked to sing in Sacrament meeting. She asked me to play for her musical number. Then before Sacrament started I was asked to lead the music as well. So even though I got a week off, I really didn't get a week off. And even though I wasn't as stressed as I can be sometimes, it was still wonderful to serve where I was needed.

Doctor Jokes
Josh and I get to go to the Harry Potter movie today. I am so excited! We have been waiting and waiting to see it! And we are also getting ready for Haylee and Owen...so I'm cleaning the house.
Josh has started his collection of Dr. Jokes. The first was told to us in the branch. Knowing that Josh was working at Domino's at the time, the member of the branch said, "So, have you chosen your specialty yet?"
Josh responded and said, "Not yet."
The member then said, "Well, I would guess you would want to become an OB-GYN because you have so much experience with DELIVERIES."
Ha ha.
The next joke came from Josh's classes this week.
Four doctors went duck hunting: A General Practitioner, a Psychiatrist, a Pathologist, and a Surgeon. When the first duck came along, the GP raised his shotgun. Initially, he was unsure if it was a duck. As he turned to the psychiatrist to get a second opinion, the duck flew away. Not long after, a second duck came along and the psychiatrist lined up his weapon. As he took aim, he knew that the duck was truly a duck. But he began to think, does the duck know that he is a duck? By the time the pathologist pointed out that a self-aware duck tasted the same as a disillusioned duck, the shrink's prey had flown away. A little while later a third duck barely began to fly above the tree line and without looking the surgeon snapped off one decisive shot. The surgeon turned to the pathologist and said, "Go see if that's a duck."

The Majesty of God's Power
If you want to feel small, powerless and completely dependent on God, I suggest you drive through a midwest thunderstorm. Tonight I had to go grocery shopping and the storm was just getting started. While out I saw magnificent lightning and felt thunder that shook my car. It was scary yet awesome all at the same time.

The Lied Jungle
Emmett and I went to the Omaha Zoo again today and visited the Lied Jungle, a very realistic version of the rainforest. It was amazing to walk through the doors and FEEL jungle air, HEAR jungle sounds, as if I was really IN the jungle. Since we were there so early in the morning, we were the only ones in the entire complex, making it an even more poignant experience. There were parts describing the caves where you would walk through dark tunnels and parts where the macaws were so close you could almost reach them, with no cages or nets! Over the walkways are jungle plants where birds can perch and scare you (like one did to me!). It was so realistic it was almost creepy. I could tell that Emmett didn't like the dark parts because he would whimper. I was scared too so we walked as quickly as we could through the scary parts but stopped to enjoy the rest. Wow....

Our First Tornado
...or at least warnings of one and high winds (70-80 mph). I was at my Mary Kay meeting when the sirens were going, but of course I was in a basement and couldn't even hear what the sirens sounded like. There was a lot of rain and wind so I hunkered down until it blew over (only about 30 minutes) and then drove home. I didn't see any real damage until today while I was driving in North Omaha. I saw a light pole FLATTENED, a brick building that looked as if it had been hit by a wrecking ball near the roof, and trees were everywhere, except standing vertical along the sides of the road like normal. It was shocking. There are members of the branch that have been without power for 24 hours already. I haven't really heard that a tornado actually "touched down" but from the evidence I wouldn't be surprised if one did. What an eye opener!

Tusking?
I am trying to put a funny comic strip on my blog but I am so far being unsuccessful. In case I can't ever figure out my printer/scanner I will put what it says and why I like it so much.
It is a B.C. comic showing an aarvark and a wooly mammoth by a water hole.
The aardvark says to the mammoth, "You look awful."
The mammoth replies, "The missus and I were up all night with the baby."
The aardvark asks, "Tusking?"
And the mammoth says, "You got it."
I think every parent would think this is funny because inevitably the teeth come through at night. Why is that? Emmett had two bad nights in a row and finally two top teeth broke through the gums. He will soon resemble a vampire, because it wasn't the two teeth in the middle, like I expected. His middle two top teeth, or the places where they should be, are still very swollen. Who knows how long it will take for them to finally come in. I just hope it's during the daytime.

Sister Hummel
I love experiences that give a new (and most times, better) perspective on life. Last Thursday, Josh and I went to the Winter Quarter temple for the first time and did sealings. In our group was the cutest little old lady, Sister Hummel. She is completely confined to her wheelchair and could barely move her own arms. She had some family names and was proxy for the mother. It was just so neat to see someone that frail STILL SERVING! She didn't let her age stop her from doing what she knew was important.
The sealer stopped partway through and told us more about Sister Hummel. He explained how before the Winter Quarters temple was built she would travel by bus to attend the temple. She had attended at Denver, Dallas, Chicago, Nauvoo, and probably others. Now, if you are not familiar with where Omaha is, it is in the middle of the country and is at least eight hours away from any of the listed cities! This sweet woman helped me see a different perspective.
Perhaps it is not how much time we put into serving others that matters to the Lord; perhaps it is how great the sacrifice.

Keeping Busy
It has been a few days since I last wrote...life gets busy with so many insignificant things sometimes. I don't feel like I've really accomplished anything in the past two days other than running errands, washing dishes, taking care of Emmett and occasionally reading in my Anne of Windy Poplars book. I know that I will eventually fall into a better routine now that Josh has started medical school, and I'm grateful for that.

Top Ten Ways You Can Support Your Medical Student
During orientation this week they had a meeting for family and friends where they discussed how we can support them during school. I took some notes and wanted to share their ideas with all of you.
10. They will be working hard....so don't expect them to be calling you every day, or sometimes every week. They're not dead if they don't call, they're just busy.
9. Their survival equals their success....For the first time in their lives, they will be surrounded by people as smart as themselves. They may flunk a quiz for the first time. Remind them that they just need to survive the tough times and they will be successful.
8. Expect ups and downs....just like in life, the study of medicine will create ups and downs. One week they may be in the depths of despair and the next flying high in the clouds.
7. Ask about their studies....but don't force the issue. They may just want to talk about something else to get a break.
6. Listen.....just let them talk.
5. Support in any way you can....perhaps send a care package every once in a while, or a nice card, etc.
4. Allow them to develop their professionalism...if they call with a problem, have them go to their professors and other Creighton support staff and deal with the problem professionally.
3. Encourage them to be active with hobbies, exercise, peer groups, social events, etc.....they need a life outside of their studies to maintain balance.
2. Encourage them to use their resources....including Creighton staff and tutors.

White Coat Ceremony

The white coat worn by doctors has a lot of history. At Josh's white coat ceremony, the Assistant Dean explained how the white coat evolved into a symbol of healing. It was introduced at the time when hospitals were changing from a place that people went to die, to a place where they went to be healed. It also was an effort by the physicians at the time to distinguish themselves as scientists. The black nurse's habit was replaced by the white nurse's uniform during the same time. I thought this history was very fascinating.

Married 2 Medicine
Josh, Emmett and I went to a BBQ sponsored by the club Married 2 Medicine (M2M). It was really neat to meet other M1 students and their spouses. So far we are the only ones from Idaho but Josh thinks there are 2 Idahoans in his class. Maybe we'll meet them tomorrow at the White Coat Ceremony! This whole orientation is being really fun. Josh is getting VERY excited to start next week.

The Children's Museum:videos
We had a fun time last week at the Omaha Children's Museum and I am finally getting around to
putting up the videos we took while there.
Emmett had a great time and took a great nap afterwards because
he was so tuckered out. I am also putting on a video of him pulling himself up to the piano because I think it's cute. And double click on the pictures to see his two little bottom teeth. He is teething again...this time I think the top ones are coming
through. He has been chewing and chewing on everything he can get a hold of. He found Josh's combination bike lock and he loved chewing on the cold metal parts.

Playing at the Park

We had a branch playgroup this last Thursday at a park with gigantic metal slides. Emmett wasn't too sure about going down the slide with Josh but he still smiled for the camera. He's such a happy little guy. And...we had his 9 month checkup at the Dr.'s today and he weighed 19 lbs. 7 oz., measured 28 1/2 inches long and did not like getting his tempurature taken with a rectal thermometer. He screamed and screamed at that nurse. But developmentally, the Doc said, he is perfect, even though his head circumference is only in the 25 percentile for his age group. I don't think his head looks small though. I think it's just right. Especially when that little head says, "Mama".

My friend's new baby!
Here is an adorable picture of my friend's new baby. This is Tamara and Dustin Thompson with their new baby girl Andy Jocelyn Thompson, born July 24th.
I think she's just SO cute!

The Omaha Children's Museum
Today we used our free guest pass at the Omaha Children's Museum and Emmett had a great time playing in the Wiggle Room. It was designed for children ages 0-3 years. Emmett loved the big yellow bouncy ball. He loves to push things that roll and then crawl after them. The museum had a section about Bob the Builder with gigantic legos and Lincoln logs. It also had a piano with three octave that worked with colored buttons instead of piano keys. The cool thing about the piano was that each button lit up a big round light on the wall. I, of course, loved the piano.
